The Illinois Department of Transportation’s (IDOT) bridge replacement project at North Ave (IL-64) and the Des Plaines River will commence within the coming weeks. Message boards will be installed on-site, no less than one week in advance of any impacts to the roadway, announcing the specific start date of construction. Project completion is estimated for the summer of 2015, with the first phase to be completed late summer/early fall of 2014. During this first phase of the project, the south half of North Ave will be closed. Eastbound and westbound travel will still be available through what are currently the westbound lanes of travel. Detours will be installed prior to construction commencing as no turns will be allowed onto southbound Thatcher Ave from North Ave and Thatcher Ave will be closed to through traffic between North Ave and Greenfield Street. These closures will likely cause delays and it is recommended that all motorists follow the detour signage. As a River Forest resident, you are encouraged to avoid this river-crossing if possible. Additional river-crossings can be utilized at Chicago Ave, Lake St, Washington Blvd, or Madison St.
